American Cockroach

American cockroaches are the largest common cockroach species, measuring 1.5 to 2 inches in length with a reddish-brown body and yellowish figure-eight pattern behind their heads. Often called palmetto bugs or sewer roaches, they have wings and are capable of short flights. Despite their name, they're native to Africa and the Middle East. These cockroaches are common in commercial buildings, sewers, and steam tunnels.
Habitat & Behavior
American cockroaches prefer warm, moist environments and live in sewers, storm drains, steam tunnels, basements, crawl spaces, and around plumbing. They enter buildings through sewer connections, drains, and gaps around utility lines. Indoors, they inhabit laundry rooms, bathrooms, kitchens, and areas with high humidity. Unlike German cockroaches, they're more common in commercial settings than residences. They aggregate in large groups and produce a characteristic musty odor.
