Carpenter Ants

Camponotus spp.

Active:Most active from spring through fall (March-October), with increased indoor activity during wet weather

Carpenter ants are large, black or dark-colored ants measuring 1/4 to 1/2 inch in length. Unlike termites, they don't eat wood but excavate it to create nesting galleries, leaving behind piles of sawdust-like material called frass. These destructive pests are one of the most common wood-damaging insects in North America.

Habitat & Behavior

Carpenter ants prefer moist, damaged, or decaying wood both indoors and outdoors. They commonly nest in wall voids, hollow doors, foam insulation, and wooden structural members. Outside, they inhabit tree stumps, firewood piles, landscape timbers, and fence posts. Satellite colonies may be established inside homes while the main colony remains outdoors.

Signs of Infestation

  • Piles of wood shavings (frass) near wooden structures or baseboards
  • Rustling sounds within walls, especially at night when they're most active
  • Large black ants trailing in lines, particularly in kitchens and bathrooms
  • Small openings in wood surfaces with smooth, clean galleries inside
  • Winged reproductive ants (swarmers) emerging in spring

Health & Property Risks

Carpenter ants can cause significant structural damage over time by hollowing out wooden beams, joists, and supports. While they don't spread disease, their presence indicates moisture problems that could lead to wood rot and mold. Left untreated, a carpenter ant infestation can compromise the structural integrity of your home and result in costly repairs.

Prevention Tips

  • Eliminate moisture sources by repairing leaky pipes, roofs, and gutters
  • Remove dead trees, stumps, and rotting wood from your property
  • Store firewood at least 20 feet away from your home and off the ground
  • Seal cracks and crevices around your home's foundation and exterior
  • Trim tree branches and vegetation that touch your home's exterior
  • Replace water-damaged wood and ensure proper ventilation in attics and crawl spaces
