Subterranean Termites

Reticulitermes spp.

Active:Active year-round underground; swarmers emerge in spring (typically March-May) depending on region

Subterranean termites are pale, soft-bodied insects measuring 1/8 to 1 inch long depending on caste. Worker termites are cream-colored, while reproductive swarmers are dark brown to black with wings. These destructive pests live in underground colonies of 60,000 to 2 million individuals and cause over 5 billion dollars in property damage annually in the United States.

Habitat & Behavior

Subterranean termites live in underground colonies in soil and build mud tubes to access above-ground food sources. They require contact with soil moisture and construct protective tubes up foundations, through cracks, and across concrete to reach wood. They infest structural lumber, floor joists, wall studs, and any wood in contact with soil. Colonies can extend 150 feet from the nest.

Signs of Infestation

  • Mud tubes running up foundations, in crawl spaces, or on walls
  • Discarded wings near windows, doors, or on windowsills in spring
  • Wood that sounds hollow when tapped or is damaged beneath the surface
  • Cracked or bubbling paint on wood surfaces
  • Sagging floors, doors, or windows due to structural damage
  • Piles of what looks like sawdust (frass) near wooden structures

Health & Property Risks

Subterranean termites cause severe structural damage by consuming wood from the inside out, often leaving outer surfaces intact until damage is extensive. They compromise floor joists, support beams, wall studs, and foundations, potentially making homes unsafe. Termite damage is not covered by homeowners insurance. Early detection is critical as colonies can consume several pounds of wood annually. Left untreated, infestations cause tens of thousands in repair costs.

Prevention Tips

  • Eliminate wood-to-soil contact around your home's foundation
  • Repair leaky faucets, pipes, and gutters that create moisture
  • Ensure proper drainage directing water away from foundations
  • Remove dead trees, stumps, and buried wood debris from your property
  • Store firewood at least 20 feet from your home and off the ground
  • Schedule annual professional termite inspections
